1833
Isaac Cohen, a freemason, tea dealer and Berlin wool warehouseman, is one of the first known Jews in Hastings and was noted in Hastings as early as 1813.

By 1894 there were about fifty local Jews attending High Holyday services.
1850 Circa
The railway arrived in the 1850s, bringing tourists and Jewish visitors and encouraged the establishment of Jewish boarding houses and hotels.
1877
Chief Rabbi Adler comes and stays in Hastings for his health in 1877.
1881
Beaufort House College (and synagogue) is established by leading Jewish educationalist and scholar, Rev. Bender and educated Jewish students.
1894
Halpern's 'Commercial Directory of the Jews of United Kingdom' reveals there are 6 Jewish hotels in St Leonards and Hastings and the 'Albany' is particularly important.
1921
In 1921, a 'Hastings, St Leonards, and Bexhill Congregation' was announced, with services at Criterion House, 2 Robertson-terrace, Hastings (the address of Mrs Kornbloom), conducted by Rev. I. Young
1974
In September 1974, Rev. Malcolm Weisman launched the new Jewish community in the Hastings, Bexhill and Battle areas of Sussex: the Hastings and District Jewish Society. The society continues to this day, holding services at Bexhill.
