AJ Ayer

Alfred Jules (Freddie) Ayer was born in 1910 and was a friend and colleague of Sir Isaiah Berlin. He was the only child of a Swiss-French father and a Dutch-Jewish mother.

A J Ayer was one of the most influential philosophers of his generation and Britain's leading exponent of logical positivism in the 20th century. Christ Church granted him the academic post initially created for Albert Einstein.
He died in 1989.
